Feeling stuck

Plateaus, ruptures, and when to raise the problem with your therapist.

Feeling stuck in therapy is common. Sometimes it means the work is near something important. Sometimes it means the fit is wrong, the pace is off, or something between you and the therapist has gone unspoken.

Useful moves: say you feel stuck, name what “stuck” is like this week, and ask how your therapist understands it. Notice whether the conversation opens or closes. Plateaus can be worked with. Chronic deadness that cannot be discussed usually cannot be treated.

You are allowed to ask for a pause, a second opinion, or a change of therapist. Ending is not always quitting. Sometimes it is the next honest step.
